well, finally winter is here and we've got some news coming.

jonathan/HIS CLANCYNESS is touring southern italy these days and his long-awaited vinyl-only 'always mist revisited' LP is finally set for march release on SFH, in collaboration with splendour (no) and sixteen tambourines records (jp). 12" are on their way and the nice guys at LEGNO are taking care of the sleeves. more details and audio preview to come soonish.

then we'll have a beautiful ISAN ep out early spring and another sfh-goes-paper thing coming in a few weeks. it'll be the first one in a series. you should looking forward to it indeed if you're into paper, photography and beauty. just saying.

"domenica 27 agosto 1950 nella stanza 43 dell’hotel roma di torino,
muore cesare pavese all’età di 42 anni. verso le 20:30 di quel giorno il padrone decide di far sfondare la porta. lo scrittore è sul letto, vestito, ha gli occhi chiusi, il volto disteso. il giorno precedente pavese ha lasciato l’appartamento di via la marmora, verso le due del pomeriggio prende il tram e arriva alla stazione di porta nuova, davanti all’albergo roma, in piazza carlo felice. chiede una camera con telefono, gli danno la 43 al terzo piano in fondo al corridoio: non è rivolta sulla piazza della stazione, ma su una piazzetta laterale. quel pomeriggio lo scrittore non esce, si fa portare un tè, chiede diversi numeri di telefono poi si reca alla sede dell’unità. lascia un messaggio: «perdono tutti e a tutti chiedo perdono. va bene? non fate troppi pettegolezzi». sullo scrittoio una copia dei dialoghi con leucò."

well. it's nearly march and we're still here, dropping two lines about what we're into these days. while those fu*/ing awesome BUZZ ALDRIN guys are about to head off to europe for a bunch of UK/germany/belgium/france dates, jonathan/HIS CLANCYNESS is packing for the first A CLASSIC EDUCATION north-america tour (w/ british sea power), prepping a 7" for tokyo's sixteen tambourines label and definitely finishing up tunes for his long-awaited first vinyl release on SFH, we're working on a few things set for spring/summer release.

a new CRIMEA X kraut/kosmische 3" cd-r will be out in a month or so. the HUSBAND one will follow a few weeks later. then we could have some exciting UK names with us, plus other buzzs to be confirmed too (including the first SFH-goes-paper release, maybe). looking forward to announcing everything else soon, ish.

AN ISLAND is an unconventional music performance film and an abstract documentary about a band and an island. in august 2010, french filmmaker vincent moon and efterklang's 8 piece-live band met up on an island off the danish coast. the objective was to shoot a film. a film with the same length as an album, and a film full of performances, experiments and collaborations. over an intense period of 4 days efterklang collaborated with more than 200 local musicians, kids and their own parents, creating new performances and interpretations of songs from their album 'magic chairs' (4AD/rumraket, 2010).

"that's one of the delights of the work, its small scale. another is the sense of something made by hand, with care, the sense of marks unique to each design. that is certainly the case with the cover of hauschka's 'small pieces': four panels of the small card sleeve bear the print of a roughly square block print, two red and two grey/black. on the red squares, there's a hair line that shows the block was turned 90 degrees between each print. the artist’s name also looks hand printed, the treatment and roughness of the ink a pleasure to the eye..."

recorded over the course of three years hissometer ep (originally released on cassette) is the debut for ottawa (canada) native his clancyness. clancy did everything himself this time, mixing lo-fi with mid-fi to create eight tunes that present sparse texture, weird pop outbursts and dreamy melodies. simple repetitive beats are used to give power to the backbone of reverb drenched songs and fuzzy guitars. guitars were also set aside in favor of mandolin, glock, synth, loops and organs…whatever could carry the warmth of the voice. just about everything was documented in bologna, italy amongst the backdrop of a once joyous now snoozing city. this is what inspired this ep. in the meanwhile his clancyness has started to play with a few like minded spirits such as women, clinic & handsome furs in an urge to recreate the dark-dream pop effect that plays out on hissometer ep -- myspace.com/hisclancyness

'nivalis' is the second release from simon scott after his debut album 'navigare' was released in october 2009 on miasmah recordings from berlin run by erik skodvin from deaf center/svarte greiner. it was written, recorded and mixed by simon on 18th/19th december 2009 during heavy snowfall at studio o3o3o in cambridge.

"the whole time i was writing this piece the snow just never stopped falling so i had this amazing visual flow that inspired me to keep on throwing musical ideas into the track. i had no intention to venture outside so i just kept on recording for two days, mixing as i went along, until the snow stopped. i added recordings of me clearing snow and ice from my doorstep whilst my heater was working flat out to push the sub zero temperatures up a few degrees. i see 'nivalis' as a tribute to the winter, the snow and the beauty of how the seasons change here in england." -- myspace.com/o3o3o

simon scott is the ex slowdive drummer ('just for a day' LP, 'souvlaki' LP and the '5ep') who runs the kesh recording label from cambridge and is also in seavault with antony ryan from isan who have released music on morr music.

he has shared studio and stage with brian eno, klimek, machinefabriek, jasper tx, nils frahm, seasons pre-din, rafael anton irisarri, xela, fever ray, svarte greiner, marcud fjellstrom, lawrence english, fennesz and taylor deupree.

he has also remixed on, autistici and isan, provides production to the 'hintergarten' album by hannu and has co written with the sight below (who scott plays guitar for live) for the second album 'it all falls apart' due spring 2010.

hey there. this is a new tune i did for an exhibition called "in memory". it was held in an old villa near bologna (IT), from the 16th century, really cold and warm at the same time i guess. painter ester grossi, art collective moustache style and giulia mazza took part in the exhibition.

i actually just made this tune up for photographer giulia mazza's room, the song was blasted really loud continuously with projections, lights and pictures. it's basically all thought out with this shot in mind:

"small pieces" is hauschka's seventh release since 2004. after the great feedback on his "ferndorf" album and the "snowflakes and carwrecks" ep the german pianist is focused on very minimal little pieces with a few or even no preparations.

these 5 songs are small compositions with composed melodies and they seemed to be pictures or little vague and fast impressions of a long train ride.

"sehnsucht" is the german word for "longing" and it is a kind of theme for this record as much as a reference to romanticism. "flingern" -a part of düsseldorf- and "brooklyn" are clear defined places that have stories and on the other side. there is "unknown" and "wohin" which are questions or words that describe insecurity and undefined future.

the tracks on 'institutionalized' come from the same home recordings sessions that formed my recent debut solo album, 'details not recorded'. even so, listening to them now within the context of an ep, they sound to me like a subtle progression, a signpost to the way forward.

around the time of recording, i spent a couple of days loitering around whitechapel hospital here in london, where joseph carey merrick ('the elephant man') was institutionalized in the 1890's. my obsession with merrick is well-documented but unashamed. his is a story of human wretchedness and human compassion. i'm fascinated by both in equal measure, though my attraction to wandering hospital corridors when i'm not the slightest bit ill might be viewed as worrying to some.

i've thrown in a cover of sonic youth's 'secret girl', not only because i've always loved the 'EVOL' album but because the words remind me of merrick and anyone else who ever looked (or felt) different. there's inexcusably something of david lynch's 'the elephant man' movie in my sonic palette here; the hospital's coal-fed victorian boiler room.

recorded over the course of three years hissometer cassette is the debut for ottawa (canada) native his clancyness. clancy did everything himself this time, mixing lo-fi with mid-fi to create eight tunes that present sparse texture, weird pop outbursts and dreamy melodies. simple repetitive beats are used to give power to the backbone of reverb drenched songs and fuzzy guitars. guitars were also set aside in favor of mandolin, glock, synth, loops and organs…whatever could carry the warmth of the voice. just about everything was documented in bologna, italy amongst the backdrop of a once joyous now snoozing city. this is what inspired the cassette. in the meanwhile his clancyness has started to play with a few like minded spirits such as women, clinic & handsome furs in an urge to recreate the dark-dream pop effect that plays out on the C25 -- myspace.com/hisclancyness
